Computer Basic Knowledge: No one in our society today can ignore the need to learn how to use computer properly any longer. Not quite long ago, food, shelter and money were the three primary necessities of man. But today, basic computer skills have also joined the list too.

Due to the speed the whole world is fast becoming computerized and demand for experienced computer users in every industry today, everyone now is feeling the need and urgency to not only learn, but to also master how to use a computer very well. Pere Marquette District Library to offer computer classes

The new year saw many changes here at the library. One of these many great changes is that we are now pleased to offer to the community Computer Classes. As we all know, computers and technology have become much more than just a hobby or toy. Computers are in our everyday lives whether it is on the job, in our schools, or at home.

Our hopes at the library is to be able to offer people in our community the chance to learn how to use their computers and pieces of technology so that they can get the most out of them and better themselves for the future.

The first week in January, we offered two classes. Signup sheets filled up within a week, forcing us to offer more classes to accommodate all the interested individuals.

Class sizes have just boomed from there. We began offering classes three to four nights a week on a variety of topics. All of the classes were nearly full, even with some repeat patrons eager to continue the learning from class to class.

Our initial offerings are all a basic set of courses including Basic Microsoft Windows, Basic Word, Basic Excel, Basic PowerPoint, and How to use the Internet. The feedback from all classes has been fantastic and has helped create a completely new set of offerings for February.

We ask students at the end of the class to fill out a questionnaire identifying any types of classes that they may want to see offered in the future. We have received many requests and because of that, we are going to offer more specialized training classes including How to use your iPod, How to use a Digital Camera, and Advanced Computer Repair.

Feedback from the community is key to success with the training classes. The library is committed to helping all those in need of technological training and if we know what the people are looking for, we can begin to offer training around new topics.

OverDrive and eBook training is one of the newest class we are offering. The Pere Marquette District Library now offers its patrons Digital Books and Audio Books for download. The system is called OverDrive and can be found linked to our website at http://www.pmdl.org.

The OverDrive system allows card-holding patrons of the library to shop for eBooks or audio books and download them directly to their audio device or eReader. Currently the Sony eReader, Barnes & Noble Nook, and your personal computer are supported eReading devices. Apple iPod, Generic MP3 players, smart phones and personal computers are compatible with audio book offerings.

Audio books and eBooks alike are available to be checked out for seven, 14, or 21 days. When your selected due date comes arrives, the books will automatically return themselves to the system. This new digital collection is taking off strong. To accommodate patrons who want to use the system, we are offering a specialized class that focuses on how to download and transfer books to your device.

Turkmenistan to boost PC user training

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has urged the government to ensure that government officials and pupils alike acquire basic PC user skills.

Addressing a cabinet meeting January 10, he ordered government officials to take computer courses and be ready to pass an exam upon completion. He also urged the distribution of computers to all schools and computer courses for all pupils.

Bakhysh G. of the Ashgabat mayor’s office’s planning unit praises the initiative.

“I am over 50 now; in my younger years, we didn’t care much for computerisation,” he said. “I think learning some PC user skills will be helpful, especially as regards my communication with officials at other agencies — if I learn to use e-mail.”

Many government officials in Turkmenistan still cannot operate a computer, he said.

“Youth are handy with computers, but for us from the older generation, taking this kind of course will be helpful. Thanks, Mr. President.”
It’s important for everyone to learn PC user skills young, Usniya Gakhramonova, computer science teacher at School No. 45 in Ashgabat, said.

“For all I know, Ashgabat schools don’t face this problem — many of them were equipped with computers back in 2009, after the new education law was passed,” she said. “But in other cities and, particularly, in rural areas, the problem is pretty bad.”

Many children in Ashgabat have PCs at home.

“When ninth-graders first come to attend my classes, many of them already know how to handle a PC and know the basic programmes,” Gakhramonova said. “But that’s so only in the capital.”

Vilyura Khankeldiyeva, said her family lacks access to computers at home and school alike.

“I’m a housewife, my husband is the sole breadwinner earning only US $400 per month, and we also have a six-year-old daughter to feed,” she said. “We can’t afford a computer, nor do they have any PCs at my son’s school. But now that the president has taken up this matter, I hope it’ll get computers soon.”

The Education Ministry has been ordered to estimate how many PCs schools need, said a ministry official who requested anonymity because he lacked authorisation to talk to media.

“Teachers of computer science and other subjects will be sent for retraining to Russia and Belarus,” he said.
Turkmenistan did not have a single internet café when Berdymukhamedov took office in 2006. Today, the country has three, all in Ashgabat.

Sayid Nuraliyev, 24, visits an internet café from time to time, since he has no PC of his own, he said.

“There are not very many computers there, and the Web browsers are slow,” he said. “I was in Kazakhstan a year ago; the situation there is much better – new computers, high-speed browsers and all. … I hope with the president’s new directive we’ll get all those things, too.”

Ever more employers require job seekers to have computing skills even though the country lags behind its neighbours in computer technology development, Nuraliyev noted.

Free computer courses commence Jan. 31 at RHS

The Refugio High School Parent Resource Center will offer two computer courses free of charge, including a beginner’s computer course and an intermediate computer course.

Both courses will begin on Monday, Jan. 31. The beginner’s course will focus on basic computer skills, such as emailing, basic programs, saving and deleting, scanning files/pictures, as well as what to look for when buying a personal computer.

The intermediate course will teach participants how to utilize the programs Excel and Powerpoint.

Both classes will meet at the high school on Monday evenings from 5:30-7:30 beginning Jan. 31 and ending March 7. Each class will accept 20 participants and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you live within the Refugio School District and are interested in either course, please contact Lisa Herring at 361-526-5400 ext. 2009, by Friday, Jan. 28, to register.

The courses are available through a Capital Fund Grant with the Teas Education Administration.

The RISD team just returned from a training course in Austin last week. Team members include Terry Kendall, teacher representative, Todd Deaver, principal, Frank Hosey, civic leader, Robbie Ramirez, non-profit organization, and Lenny Anzaldua, parent.

In addition to the previous course at the beginning of the year and the upcoming computer courses, another goal is to establish welding and nursing courses in the future and upgrade the welding equipment at RHS.

Lander Offers Continuing Education Courses Spanning a Broad Landscape of Subjects

Lander University is taking applications for its spring continuing education lineup, which begins on Feb. 10 and offers a wide variety of courses, including professional development and leadership skills programs and travel close to home and abroad.

There will be three bridge classes, one for beginners, a refresher for current players and an intermediate-level course.

For individuals interested in developing or expanding their creative skills, there are courses on art and picture framing, calligraphy, crocheting a prayer shawl, hot glass bead making, using digital technology to record life experiences and moviemaking.

Introduction to computers is among the several computer classes on the spring schedule that also includes courses on computer service and repair, spreadsheet applications of Microsoft Excel and online photo galleries.

Among the communications courses are beginning sign language, introductory Russian, conversational Spanish and Spanish medical terminology.

There will be instruction in basic and intermediate ballroom dance, fundamentals of golf and tennis for beginners and intermediate-level players.

Other courses include children�s literature; the history of Hollywood; rocks, minerals and fossils; blogging; genealogy; Gospel portraits; and instruction for high school students to prepare them to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

Beginning in March, professional development specialist Toni Sample will lead a series of training seminars on effective leadership. She will offer sessions on interpersonal communications, time management, reducing stress and more.

A series of nine free lectures commemorating the150th anniversary of the start of the American Civil War will be held on Friday evenings at Lander beginning Feb. 11.

Continuing Education coordinator Shelley Grund said excursions have been arranged for a daylong visit to Diamond Hill in Antreville, and a three-day, two-night trip to Charleston. Grund said there will be an English gardens tour in June, a separate trip to England to visit Oxford and Cambridge and a Christmas holiday spectacular in Prague and Vienna.

New semester at ElderCollege

Everyone 55 and older is invited to attend the Comox Valley ElderCollege information forum this Saturday to learn about courses offered in a new semester.

Each course presenter will give a brief description of his/her course and this is the perfect opportunity to decide which subjects interest you.

The information forum runs from 10 a.m. to noon in the Stan Hagen Theatre at North Island College, with a short coffee break included.

Registration starts at 9 a.m., Monday, Jan. 17, and the first courses will start on Jan. 31 and most run for eight weeks.

This semester, ElderCollege is offering 32 general courses (including five computer courses), 19 short courses (individual four-hour courses held on either Monday or Friday), and the Saturday Lecture Series, which runs for eight weeks at 10 a.m. in the Stan Hagen Theatre, starting on Saturday, Feb. 5.

Membership to ElderCollege is only $11.20 a year. General courses and the lecture series are $36.96 and short courses are each $11.20.

Free computer workshops by Blue Sky Net and Blue Sky Libraries

Blue Sky Net and Blue Sky Libraries are offering free computer workshops for all ages.

Participants in Mattawa, Bonfield, East Ferris, Temagami, Nipissing First Nation, West Nipissing, Callander and Powassan will be able to enroll in a number of workshops.

Workshops will be offered through the winter and start as soon as Jan. 24. Each library will be able to provide information to those interested with course dates, times and descriptions.
The workshops are part of a number of initiatives planned by Blue Sky Net to follow up the implementation of the High-Speed Broadband Network that Blue Sky Net has been helping build.

Registration is available at participating libraries.
